Open Office offers a totally free alternative to Microsoft Office. It includes word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, and database packages. If you are comfortable using MS Office programs you will be comfortable using Open Office. It opens MS Office files and can save files to MS Office format so there are no file format compatibility issues.

The GIMP graphic image manipulation program is an open source alternative to the extremely expensive Adobe Photoshop program. It offers nearly all of the artistic tools provided in Photoshop. PLEASE NOTE: You will need to download and install a program called GTK toolkit prior to installing GIMP.
Scribus Desktop Publishing Software

Scribus is now available for Windows and Mac users! After experimenting with it a bit I can see Scribus has some powerful mojo. It's a stable, fully featured package that can easily go head to head against any Windows DTP from Microsoft or Adobe.

Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Supported SVG features include shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, patterns, and grouping. Inkscape also supports Creative Commons meta-data, node editing, layers, complex path operations, bitmap tracing, text-on-path, flowed text, direct XML editing, and more. It imports formats such as Postscript, EPS, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.
