What is the USC Aiken Open Source Project?

The goal of the USCA Open Source Project is to promote a rich, diverse, computing environment on the campus. The project has three primary objectives:

  • To promote awareness of open source software applications that can directly enhance teaching and learning among USCA faculty, students, and staff.
  • To deploy a variety of web and desktop open source software demonstration projects with detailed how to documentation to assist implementation in courses taught on campus.
  • To build an open source community on the USCA campus that will complement and support other initiatives to incorporate new information technologies into the curriculum.

We all use open source software everyday. For example, nearly 70% of the active websites on the World Wide Web today use the open source Apache Web Server software.

Almost all of the email delivered everyday over the Internet uses open source email server software. Indeed, the web itself is probably the biggest open source project of all. It works as well as it does because its architecture is governed by open (non-proprietary) standards set forth by the Wide Web (W3) Consortium.

Note: Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and Director of the W3C, credits open source software as a "significant factor" that explains why the Web became so popular so quickly. See the discussion.

The USCA Open Source Project Website was created to serve as a resource to the USCA campus to provide information about the enormous catalog of free, open source software programs. We intend to spotlight uses of open source software on the USCA campus and elsewhere.

In virtually every category of Windows and Apple desktop software you could name (e.g. word prcessor, spreadsheet, web browser, email, etc.), there are exceptionally high quality and FREE alternatives from which to choose offered up by the Open Source software community.

The USCA Open Source Project wants you to know about these resources. We want you to consider trying some of this software. After all, the price happy smiley FREE happy smiley is right!

You don't have to abandon Windows to try these software alternatives. There are literally thousands of free, Open Source programs that work on the Windows PC on your desk.

We want to answer your questions about using Open Source software and we hope to build an active community of Open Source software users who can support each other through the forums and other collaboration tools available through this website.
